A A K S, bringing African basketry to the forefront

Having grown up being surrounded by beautiful arts and crafts from in and around Africa, we have both always felt right at home in and amongst beautiful basketwork from remote villages in Botswana, Africa carvings from Zambia and brightly coloured Zulu beadwork from South Africa.

Our father who travelled the African plains with his family sometimes tagging along for some of the adventures, had developed numerous relationship with many artisans in remote villages to trade and buy their handcrafts and then sell them to retailers. Our mother has always had a keen eye for exquisite beauty and design, and this in-tern always meant that our home was always full pieces that were exceptionally designed. Mixing old and new always created a look that was unique, elegant and yet playful. It’s this combined up bringing that has created a special soft spot in our hearts for African design.

When we discovered A A K S soon after we started our blog in 2015, we instantly fell in love. Here was a brand that took 2 of our greatest loves, African basketry and contemporary design and brought them together to create one of the most beautiful African brands to cross the shores. We happy that the day has come for us to share this amazing brand with you all.

A A K S was launched in 2014 by Ghanian, Akosua Afriyie-Kumi. Having graduated from one of our favourite design institutions in London, Kingston university, Akosua went on into a career within the fashion industry. Having amassed quite a substantial resume, she returned to her homeland and founded A A K S, with the intention of creating a brand that would take a much loved craft to the world.

Focusing on one her favourite weaving techniques, Akosua works closely with woman in rural villages in Ghana to create these incredibly beautiful bags that give new meaning to the perception of African basketry. The attention to detail, the beautiful craftmanship and sleek contemporary designs make each bag design stand out strong on their own, but as a collection we have to say we are quite awe struck as it’s really quite impossible to choose a favorite. 🙂

The combination of colors make each piece striking yet fun and playful. Each bag takes a whole week to complete. From the ecologically harvested raffia, from local farmers, to the sophisticated dyeing process, to the lovingly crafted basketry, the entire process requires skills that are passed down from generation to generation.

“Each collection silhouette is unique and tells a different story through detail, colour and shape. Akosua is connected to every stage of the design and production process to oversee and ensure that the end result is imbued with the spirit and soul worthy of the A A K S stamp.”
