So can a tooth brush really save the world? Well technically no, but a toothbrush that has been designed with saving our planet in mind can certainly go a long long way to saving tons and tons of plastic waste. Did you know that we consume 5 billion toothbrushes a year? Yup you read that right, that number is not a typo. That is a mega load of plastic from just toothbrushes alone, not to mention the waste from the plastic packaging that most toothbrushes are sold in.
So is there an alternative, we hear you ask? Well actually YES. Not just any old alternative, but one that has been designed by dentists (the experts on teeth that we hate to go and visit), looks incredible (that’s down to the scandi design) and is completely biodegradable. It’s called the Humble Brush.
The Humble Brush is the brainchild of dentist Noel Abdayem. Instead of just accepting the facts of the massive impact that plastic waste is having on our planet he made it his challenge to design a toothbrush with a mission.
“When we are lucky enough to be born in a wealthier part of the world it should be our duty to take care of the less fortunate. Many children will never own a toothbrush and we’re depleting natural resources and filling up the oceans with used toothbrushes. So we have to ask ourselves: can we change our ways of production and consumption? Then, can we help provide a toothbrush to those that need it most? The answer is yes!
As a dentist, Humble Brush was made not only to provide a very effective clean but also to be humble towards the planet and it’s inhabitants. Why not make a difference every day when you brush your teeth?” Noel Abdayem
Yup, this toothbrush is not only an Eco friendly alternative but it also gives back to those who have less. So with every purchase of a Humble Brush, a child in need will receive a toothbrush or alternative oral care. This is done through their Humble Smile Foundation and they have a growing number of projects across the globe as the sales of the Humble Brush continue to grow from strength to strength.
So we decided to do a test run on the Humble Brush and see what all the fuss was about. Just the packaging itself was enticing and it was lovely to see that all of it was 100% recyclable, including the wrapper inside which could easily be mistaken for dare we say it PLASTIC, but its actually made from plants and is compostable.
Then as we prized out the tooth brush we really fell in love with its beautiful simplicity, the pop of colour on the bristles just adds a fun element to what is the serious business of brushing your teeth. The bristles themselves are made from Nylon 6 which is the most biodegradable nylon in the world. The sleek 100% biodegradable bamboo handle has good grip and very comfortable to hold so you can manoeuvre the toothbrush into all those hard to reach places in your mouth. We definitely give the humble brush a big thumbs up.
Along this journey we have traveled over the last year many people have asked how they can start and make a change in the way that they purchase things. It can often be overwhelming, but what we try to tell everyone is that it’s not about making massive change in your lifestyle immediately because this simply is not possible or feasible, it’s about taking baby steps. Starting with simply changing the toothbrush that you use could be a very good place to start. We are certainly going to make this change in our households and we think the biggest joy of using the Humble Brush is knowing that a child in need somewhere in our big wide world is brushing their teeth at the same time as us with the same brush. 🙂
