We REALLY couldn’t wait to tell you about the new Abury collection that was launched super recently on 26th April! This is mega hot off the press and for those of you who haven’t heard of Abury…..what planet are you on? 😉 No, seriously, for those of you who haven’t heard of Abury, you are in for a treat because you will learn a lot about them today. As one of our favorite sustainable brands, it’s important that we kick off with a little about what Abury stand for before we tell you about their incredible new collection.
Abury create designs that respect style, quality and ethics and their belief is that all three of these important aspects can and should belong together. In fact we are in full agreement with them that something truly magical happens when you have the tenacity and humility to make this solid combination! In true Abury style, ‘together we can make it fashionable to care’!
We came across Abury over a year ago when we were researching brands that matched out Saiint ethos, but for some reason we left them on our list and didn’t write about them. Well, we believe that these things happen for a reason because now that we’re fully fledged ethical fashion advocates, we have a bigger audience to share this gorgeous brand with. What actually reminded us about Abury was an event Katie attended run by Eco Sessions in London where the inspirational Andrea (founder of Abury) was on a panel alongside other favs and her knowledge, experience and drive spurred us on to give Abury the love they so wholeheartedly deserve!! 🙂
Each year, Abury run a competition to find a designer from anywhere in the world who will get the opportunity to create an accessory capsule collection using traditional craftmanship and knowledge from a culture that is different to their own. The winners are lucky enough to win a healthy budget to spend 3 months producing a beautiful new collection for sale by Abury themselves. In 2015, the location was Ecuador, and this year will be Ethiopia, but last year, the lucky winner (Adam French from Canada), went off to Morocco to design the incredible bags you see in this post. The collection is named “Windows and Doorways’and in case you can’t tell, the designs capture the striking geometric shapes and colours of Morocco 🙂 All materials are local and the charm of the location and friendships formed can be felt in every item. We really can’t think of a better way to create accessories and you would feel so deeply proud to walk around with a product you understand inside out and that you will truly feel proud to brag about! 🙂 We are actually in awe of Abury and what they work so tirelessly to achieve!
In addition to all of the above, Abury also pay fair wages (this shouldn’t be a big deal, but it is in today’s world of fashion!). They also re-invest 50% of their profits into education in the communities they work with! Every time an Abury product is sold, they transform its’ production hours into hours of education for individuals in the communities where the product was made. Top put a giant cherry on the top, since Abury started, they have been able to give back more than 75,000 hours of education! Its phenomenal and I am sure you can now fully understand why we have so much Saiint Sister love for this incredible brand. They are living proof that you can care when you are in the business of fashion, you can still make profits and you can still create stand out designs!
