Those of you that are regular followers of our blog will remember that we did a post on Matter a socially motivated lifestyle brand. They create clothing with stories to tell – connected to a time, place, process and person. Like us they believe the world would be a better place if people asked where and why something was made. The more we ask these questions the more we become informed and the more brands will start to take note and make the changes consumers wants. In essence the power lies in hands.
If you can remember we absolutely fell in love with their jumpsuits because as you know Diana does love a good jumpsuit :-), but this time we thought we would take a look at their newly launched collection called The Kumaon Edition. Its a collaboration with Artist Preetika Saj who draws inspiration from the mystical geometric patterns of worshiping seats used in the Kumaon Region where she grew up.
In the Kumaon region, Aipan art is held with great significance socially, culturally and religiously, marking festivals, celebrations, births and death. Hand-grinded white saipan rice paste is placed on top of a red geru base. This tradition is passed down from mothers to daughters, practiced generations through generations. Dots symbolize the completeness of life and lines signify continuity and the open-endedness of life.
The 3 prints that are featured in the collection represent self discovery and they draw inspiration from the ancient art and they are then brought to life in Matter’s classic unisex styles such as The Lounge Lunghi, The Modern Monpe and The Bermuda Shorts..
– Alpine Rhythm: The motif draws inspiration from the eight petaled lotus seat, which is used for worshiping Goddess Saraswati as she is often found seated on it, symbolizing knowledge and purity of the soul. The motif creates a divine rhythm, and motivates us to look within ourselves with a mindful eye.
– Mystic Mountain: It tells a story of self-discovery, connecting the dots through time and looking within our souls. The patterns mark the different stages of life, from birth to eternity of our souls. There is a certain simplicity in the complexity of the pattern, which follows an underlying structure representing the universe within.
– Mountain Spirit: The motif represents the fusion of our environment and metaphysical realms. A reflection of delicacy and grace, influenced by the peace and serenity of the hills of the region. It expresses the spirit of the mountain and its people – their stubborn courage and indomitable will.
We just love the way the collection came together and the simplicity of the prints and the classic styling really make for a beautiful range. To find out more about the collection click here.
